Door County Veteran's Memorial
Sited in front of the Sturgeon Bay City Hall, the preliminary concept by First Sergeant Milton Schulties, a decorated Door County veteran, was architecturally refined to be what stands today. The pentagon obelisk (symbolizing the five branches of military service) was constructed out of native Door County stone, and placed upon a polished black granite pentagon base, with the names of the deceased soldiers inscribed on each of the granite panels. A bronze eagle rests upon the globe of the earth, with its sheltering wings symbolizing freedom’s vigilant and protective watch. A 4 foot high semi-circular stone wall defines the space and shelters it from the surrounding urban landscape. On the interior side of the stone wall, an inscription from John chapter 15 verse 13 reads, “Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.” Within the space are 5 black granite benches for visitor contemplation and reflection. |
