Ozaukee County Transit Station

Ozaukee County Transit had shared office and vehicle storage areas with the Ozaukee County Public Works Department and it became clear that a new facility was needed. The Transit Department worked with Somerville in programming the new facility, as well as adhering to requirements for both design and construction in regards to funding from the Federal Transit Administration and other grants. The result is a 19,000 square foot center that accommodates indoor storage for dozens of county vehicles, a vehicle wash bay, administrative office space, and public use restrooms.

The building style is reminiscent of mass transit’s past, featuring pitched roofs with long overhangs, eave brackets, and arch-topped openings. The red brick and stone exterior resembles a classic rail depot. With the County’s interurban bike/walking trail adjacent to the new facility, improving the relationship between trail users and the county facility became a design priority. A small park was incorporated as a tranquil rest area for all trail users. The park includes restroom facilities, a drinking fountain, benches, and vegetation.
